The website a service business actually needs

A business website for a service trade needs five things to work: what you do, what it costs, when you are open, how to reach you, and a way to book without speaking to anyone. Everything beyond that is optional.

Most small business sites fail on the last one. They describe the business beautifully and then leave the visitor holding a phone number at half past eight in the evening, which is precisely when people sit down and sort out their week.

What a service business website has to carry

A glazier and a removals firm sell different things but the visitor's questions rhyme. Do you cover my area, can you do it this month, roughly what will it come to, and can I sort it now.

So the structure answers those in order. A service menu with prices, an area or coverage note, opening hours, and booking as the obvious next step rather than a link buried below the fold.

Prices where people can see them

Hiding prices feels safer and costs you enquiries. Visitors read a missing price as expensive, and the ones who do ring are asking a question you have already answered a hundred times.

From Start, £99 a month, you get a service catalogue with prices and a page per service, plus variant pricing when the same job is priced by size or type. A removals firm can price by van size; a cleaner can price a two-bed against a four-bed without writing two separate pages.

Getting found, and being convincing when you are

Each service gets its own page with its own heading and text, which is what search engines have to work with. Opening hours, an FAQ and reviews give the page substance rather than filler.

The site is fast and works on a phone from the start, and images are optimised for you. That matters twice: visitors leave slow pages, and search engines notice that they do.

The running of it is not your job

Managed hosting is included on every plan. You own no server, install nothing and never choose a package size. Certificates for HTTPS are issued and renewed automatically so the padlock stays put.

Backups run nightly and the restore is tested nightly, which is the part most hosting quietly skips. Updates and security fixes are ours. If something needs attention it reaches us before it reaches your customers.

When you do not need what we sell

If you are booked solid for the next six months on word of mouth alone, a website will not make your week better and we would rather say so. Spend the money on a second pair of hands.

And if a booking request form covers you, stay on Lite at £49 a month rather than paying for a calendar you will not open. The features are there when the business changes shape, not because someone talked you into them.

A brochure page against a working one

Both look like a website; only one of them is doing a shift.

Business websites: questions worth asking

Plans run from Lite at £49 a month up to Pro at £199. Hosting, HTTPS, backups and support are in all of them, so the monthly figure is the whole figure. Paying yearly takes 20% off and prices exclude VAT.

Yes, from Start upwards. Variant pricing lets you price the same service by size or type, so a cleaning firm can list a two-bed and a four-bed under one service instead of inventing two.

Yes, on every plan, and managed means we run it. Servers, monitoring, updates and certificate renewals sit with us, and nightly backups are taken with the restore tested each night.

Always. You own the domain and your email, and we only guide you through the DNS records that point the site here. Leaving would mean pointing them somewhere else, nothing more.

Yes, on every plan. Staff accounts come with two-factor sign-in and there is an email log so you can see what the site has sent out.

Cancel whenever you like and the site stays up until the end of the period you have paid for. Your content and customer records can be exported, and the domain was yours the whole time.
